The Festivals and Their RitesStep by Step, from the Ancient Sources

Every festival carried in the Fasti, Roman and Greek. Where an ancient author or an inscription records how the rite was actually performed, the procedure is given step by step with the citation on every step. Where no procedure survives, the entry says so and supplies nothing in its place.

How to read this page

Only ancient evidence is used. Every step comes from an author writing while the gods were still worshipped, or from an inscription or excavated object. Nothing has been reconstructed by analogy, and no step has been invented to fill a gap.

Most festivals have no recorded procedure. Of the 0 festivals here, 0 have attested steps. The rest are days whose name, date and deity are known but whose rite is not — chiefly temple dedication anniversaries. Those entries carry the calendar's description and an explicit statement that no procedure survives. Use the Only festivals with attested steps filter to see the documented ones alone.

Sources are graded. Tier A is procedural instruction, inscription, or sworn legal testimony; Tier B is contemporary or eyewitness description; Tier C is a later antiquarian report quoting earlier sources; Tier D is poetry, reliable on procedure and unreliable on origins. English renderings are literal versions made for this page, not reproductions of any published translation.
